A man’s attempt to participate in a “Tear & Win” contest by Chagee Malaysia led to an unexpected mishap, resulting in a spilled drink inside his car. The incident occurred when Yap Jun Hao, the man involved, tried to peel off a perforated section of his bubble tea cup, which appeared to be part of the contest. However, his attempt backfired when he inadvertently punctured the cup, causing the drink to spill.
The incident, which was shared by Yap’s girlfriend, Tiffany, on the social media platform Xiaohongshu, quickly went viral, amassing over 10,000 likes. The post, which also included footage of the mishap, led to Yap’s name trending on the platform.
Tiffany explained that a hole in the inner cup caused the beverage to spill into the “prize compartment” of the cup, which was part of the contest’s design. In response to the viral video, Chagee Malaysia offered compensation, agreeing to cover the cost of the car wash and even offering merchandise as a goodwill gesture. The company also apologized in the video’s comment section, stating they would contact Tiffany privately.
This incident comes amid controversy surrounding Chagee’s recent “Tear & Win” contest, held from November 16 to 17 to celebrate the bubble tea chain’s 7th anniversary. The contest, which promised attractive prizes like Apple devices and luxury bags, required customers to purchase a drink and tear a perforated section of the cup to reveal if they had won.
However, the contest was marred by accusations of manipulation. Some netizens claimed that Chagee staff could peek into the cups to see the prizes, with many pointing out that influencers seemed to be the primary winners of the more desirable rewards. Despite these claims, Chagee Malaysia has yet to publicly address the allegations of contest rigging.
