A recent study has raised concerns about the mental health risks associated with excessive milk tea consumption, linking it to potential increases in depression and anxiety. Despite these warnings, young milk tea enthusiasts seem unfazed by the findings.
Li Mingchun, a 28-year-old who enjoys the drink, shared his experience during a recent dinner with friends, where one of them treated him to two bottles of milk tea, believing it perfectly complemented their meal. He drank both bottles, followed by a Coca-Cola.
“It’s common for us to buy each other milk tea. The more, the merrier,” Li said, adding that he drinks four to six cups of milk tea every week, as he prefers sugary beverages and dislikes water. Li explained that he often purchases milk tea whenever he spots a popular brand, and finds it especially refreshing after exercise. “Drinking iced milk tea after working out is especially satisfying, and sharing it with a loved one makes the experience even better.”
While Li acknowledges the health risks posed by excessive sugar consumption, he remains focused on the enjoyment the drink brings. “I think more about the happiness it gives me. If I need to burn off the calories, I just exercise every day,” he said, seemingly indifferent to the potential mental health effects highlighted in the study.
The study suggests that while milk tea may provide short-term pleasure, its overconsumption could contribute to psychological distress, a concern that appears to be of little concern to many young milk tea fans.
