On January 19, at around 11 a.m., Shin Min Daily News observed several women selling homemade food at various locations near Orchard MRT station and a nearby bus stop.
Two of the women were stationed near the escalator at the station entrance, surrounded by several bags filled with boxes of food. Every 10 minutes, a customer would approach and purchase items.
In addition, four other women were seen setting up makeshift stalls at a bus stop nearby, which was bustling with commuters. They placed over a dozen bags of pre-packed food on a low wall, engaging with potential customers as they stood nearby.
According to one of the sellers, the women are Filipino domestic workers who prepare traditional dishes from their homeland during their free time and sell them to earn extra income. The menu included items such as rice noodles, rice cakes, and various snacks, all priced at $5 per container.
One seller explained that, in addition to selling food on-site, the group also accepts orders from regular customers for special occasions and gatherings. To display the items for sale, they would sometimes place the containers on available bus stop seats, which briefly deprived commuters of seating space.
Despite this, the reporter noted that business was thriving, with the women selling approximately 50 containers of food at the bus stop within just three hours.
