Residents in Middlesbrough will receive new food waste caddies and additional recycling bins as part of a nationwide effort to improve waste management and recycling practices.
Starting in April 2026, homes across the town will be provided with food waste caddies and a separate bin for paper and card recycling. The initiative is part of the government’s Simpler Recycling scheme, designed to standardize recycling processes across the country and increase efficiency.
Geoff Field, the Director of Environment and Community Services at Middlesbrough Council, acknowledged that the town’s recycling efforts have been lacking. “We are one of the worst in the country,” Field stated, adding that the goal is to make recycling easier for residents and reduce contamination in the process.
The new food waste system includes two caddies: a smaller one for kitchen use and a larger, outdoor version for storage. The council is also in the process of acquiring specialized vehicles for collecting food waste.
The scheme, which is being funded by central government, is expected to simplify recycling in the area and encourage better participation.
