Investors interested in stocks within the Retail – Restaurants sector may be familiar with Cheesecake Factory (CAKE) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). However, when it comes to value investing, which of these two stocks stands out? A closer analysis can provide some clarity.
One effective method for identifying value stocks is through a combination of the Zacks Rank and the Style Scores system. The Zacks Rank emphasizes earnings estimates and revisions, while Style Scores help pinpoint stocks with specific desirable traits. Together, they provide a comprehensive approach to evaluating stocks.
Currently, Cheesecake Factory holds a Zacks Rank of #2 (Buy), while Chipotle Mexican Grill holds a Zacks Rank of #3 (Hold). The Zacks Rank is particularly focused on earnings estimate revisions, and with CAKE’s higher rank, it suggests that the company’s earnings outlook is improving at a faster pace than CMG’s.
In addition to the Zacks Rank, value investors often rely on traditional metrics such as the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio, price-to-sales (P/S) ratio, earnings yield, and cash flow per share to assess whether a stock is undervalued.
For instance, Cheesecake Factory has a forward P/E ratio of 13.83, significantly lower than Chipotle’s forward P/E of 42.26. Additionally, CAKE has a price-to-earnings growth (PEG) ratio of 1.40, which factors in expected earnings per share growth. In comparison, CMG’s PEG ratio stands at 2.09, indicating that investors are paying more for expected growth.
Another critical valuation measure is the price-to-book (P/B) ratio, which compares a stock’s market value to its book value (assets minus liabilities). CAKE has a P/B ratio of 5.90, while CMG’s ratio is much higher at 20.25.
These metrics contribute to CAKE’s strong Value grade of B and CMG’s weak Value grade of F. Based on both the Zacks Rank and Style Scores, CAKE emerges as the more attractive option for value investors at the moment.
