A 38-year-old woman has been sentenced to five days in jail and fined RM2,000 after being convicted of selling food to Muslims who were not fasting during Ramadan in Setiu, Terengganu.
According to Terengganu’s Chief Shariah Enforcement Officer, Aizi Saidi Abd Aziz, the woman pleaded guilty to the charge before the Shariah Subordinate Court on Monday. The sentence was handed down by Judge Mat Ropi Busu.
“She has paid the fine and is currently serving her sentence at the Pengkalan Chepa Women’s Detention Centre in Kelantan, where she will remain until March 28,” Aizi said, as reported by Kosmo.
The woman was charged under Section 19(a) of the Terengganu Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 2001.
Her arrest took place during an enforcement raid by the Terengganu Islamic Religious Affairs Department, which was part of the ongoing Op Supik Hitam operation. The raid occurred at a house in Setiu at around 12:15 p.m. on March 18.
“She was detained for selling food and drinks to individuals suspected of skipping their fast. Her actions reflect a blatant disregard for the sanctity of Ramadan,” Aizi commented.
Shariah Deputy Public Prosecutor Khanurulhajja Mustaffa led the prosecution in the case.
