The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has sounded the alarm over a potential health hazard, issuing a public health alert concerning mislabeled frozen empanadas distributed across Walmart stores nationwide. The mislabeling issue has raised significant concerns as it could expose consumers with specific allergies to serious health risks.
Product Mix – Up: A Hidden Allergy Danger
The product in question, which is labeled as “Bettergoods Chicken Curry Empanadas” on its 9.6 – ounce cardboard packaging, has been found to potentially contain Bettergoods Apple Cinnamon Empanadas instead. The critical problem lies in the fact that the apple cinnamon variety contains milk, an allergen that is not indicated on the packaging of the mislabeled product. For individuals with milk allergies, consuming this product could trigger a severe allergic reaction, which may range from mild symptoms such as hives and itching to more life – threatening conditions like anaphylactic shock.
No Recall, But Risk Remains
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) opted to issue a public health alert rather than a formal recall. This decision was made because Walmart has already ceased the sale of the product. However, the FSIS is aware that some consumers may still have the mislabeled empanadas stored in their freezers. Although there have been no reported illnesses thus far, the agency is urging consumers to exercise caution.
Identifying the Mislabeled Empanadas
To assist consumers in identifying the mislabeled product, the FSIS has provided the following details:
Retailer: Sold at Walmart stores across the United States.
Packaging: Comes in a 9.6 – ounce cardboard box with the label “Bettergoods TRADITIONALLY CRAFTED Chicken Curry Empanadas”.
Production and Packaging Dates: The empanadas were produced on November 14, 2024, and packaged between November 20 – 21, 2024.
