A growing health concern has emerged as an investigation into an outbreak of salmonella infections linked to contaminated cucumbers continues. So far, 68 people have fallen ill and 18 have been hospitalized, prompting a significant expansion of the recall.
Which Cucumbers Are Recalled?
The recall now covers cucumbers from multiple sources. SunFed’s individual cucumbers with PLU #4062, labeled “Mexico/Mexique”; Baloian Farms’ cucumbers in PamPak bags (UPC 8 2540107010 6); and store brands like Marketside (Walmart), Snowfox, Snowfruit (Kroger), and Yummi Sushi are all affected.
Where Were They Sold?
These cucumbers were sold across 26 U.S. states, including Alaska, Arizona, and California, and 5 Canadian provinces such as Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. Retailers like Walmart, Kroger, and King Soopers were involved in the distribution.
What Should Consumers Do?
Check your fridge immediately for any of the recalled cucumbers, even if they’ve been partially used. Discard them or return them to the store for a refund. Also, sanitize surfaces that may have touched the cucumbers with a bleach solution.
Salmonella Symptoms
Symptoms, which usually appear 12 – 72 hours after exposure, include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. Seek medical help if symptoms persist.
Why the Recall Expansion?
The recall grew due to the risk of cross – contamination, especially with cut or prepared cucumber products like sushi and salads. Additionally, multiple distributors received affected batches.
