An Indonesian court has sentenced a woman to two years in prison for violating the country’s blasphemy laws due to a TikTok food video she posted in March.
The video featured Lina Lutfiawati reciting a Muslim prayer before consuming crispy pork skin, which garnered millions of views. Pork is considered “haram,” or not permissible, under Islamic law.
On Tuesday, the court in the Indonesian city of Palembang, located in the southern part of Sumatra island, found the 33-year-old guilty of “spreading information intended to incite hate or individual/group enmity based on religion” and imposed a fine of 250 million rupiah ($16,249.59).
Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.
The court confirmed that Lutfiawati, who also goes by the name Lina Mukherjee, identifies as a Muslim.
Following the verdict, Lutfiawati issued a public apology for the video and expressed her astonishment at the severity of the punishment.
“I know that I am wrong, but I did not expect this punishment,” Lutfiawati stated during an interview with the local news station MetroTV.
