Residents of Kampung Padang Tapong found themselves in a state of panic on Monday night as a large Sun bear ventured into the village in pursuit of food, causing concern among the villagers.
Mohd Azmi Nazir, a 43-year-old car mechanic, encountered the startling presence of the massive Sun bear behind his house around 10:30 pm upon returning from his mother’s residence in the same village.
Describing the encounter, Mohd Azmi explained that the formidable bear, equipped with long and sharp claws, was audibly rummaging through a storage container filled with cat food situated at the back of his house. Despite Mohd Azmi’s arrival with his wife and two young children, aged one and three, the bear appeared unfazed, devouring the cat food without interruption.
“I directed my torchlight towards where the noise was coming from, and I could clearly see the huge bear ransacking a container filled with cat food,” Mohd Azmi recounted during an interview with Bernama at his residence on Wednesday (Dec 27).
Concerned for his family’s safety, Mohd Azmi quickly retreated into his house, securing the door behind him. From the safety of his home, he observed the bear’s actions through a window, noting that the animal leisurely left his premises approximately 10 minutes later.
Despite being in close proximity to humans, the bear displayed little concern for their presence, strolling slowly towards neighboring houses instead of retreating into the surrounding bushes.
“This was my first experience with the presence of a wild animal at my house since staying here for more than four years,” Mohd Azmi remarked, urging authorities to take swift action to ensure the safety of the villagers.
Expressing concern for the well-being of the community, Mohd Azmi emphasized the need for authorities to address the situation promptly and implement measures to prevent further incidents involving wild animals in the village.
