After enduring a devastating loss of seven aid workers in an Israeli airstrike last month, the humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) has announced its decision to resume operations in Gaza. The group, led by celebrity chef Jose Andres, had halted its activities following the tragic incident on April 1, when its convoy was struck by the Israel Defense Forces.
In a statement released on Sunday, April 28, WCK CEO Erin Gore emphasized the urgent need to address the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza by recommencing food deliveries. Gore affirmed the organization’s commitment to distributing meals throughout Gaza, including its northern region, despite the recent tragedy.
“The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire. We are restarting our operation with the same energy, dignity, and focus on feeding as many people as possible,” stated Gore. WCK has already distributed over 43 million meals and aims to continue this critical mission, recognizing food as a fundamental human right.
Despite the profound loss of their colleagues, WCK remains resolute in their mission to provide essential aid to those in need. “We have been forced to make a decision: stop feeding altogether during one of the worst hunger crises ever, or keep feeding knowing that aid workers and civilians are being intimidated and killed,” Gore explained.
The decision to resume operations comes less than a month after the tragic airstrike that claimed the lives of seven international aid workers. Among the victims were individuals from various countries, including a Palestinian, an Australian, a Pole, and citizens of the U.S., Canada, and the UK who were part of WCK’s security team.
WCK also announced plans to enhance their food delivery capabilities, with 276 trucks prepared to transport nearly 8 million meals into Gaza via Rafah. Additionally, trucks will be deployed through Jordan to further support the enclave.
The organization’s determination to continue its humanitarian efforts in the face of adversity underscores the critical importance of sustained aid during times of crisis. Despite the immense challenges, WCK remains steadfast in its commitment to providing essential support to vulnerable populations in Gaza.
