As trillions of periodical cicadas begin to emerge in various parts of the country, anticipation builds in Illinois for their imminent arrival. Although not yet visible in the state, the creatures are stirring just beneath the surface, prompting creative ventures such as the return of “Cicada Cakes” at Bent Fork Bakery in Highwood.
In preparation for what is predicted to be the largest cicada invasion in centuries, Bent Fork Bakery is set to unveil its unique delicacy once again. The bakery’s “Cicada Cakes,” roughly the size of standard cupcakes, are composed of either yellow or chocolate cake dipped in chocolate ganache, topped with white chocolate “wings,” and adorned with edible bright red “eyes” made of candy.
“We first introduced this distinctive creation during the cicada invasion 17 years ago, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of these ‘singing’ bugs,” the bakery shared with NBC Chicago.
Despite the whimsical appearance and timely theme, Bent Fork Bakery assures customers that no actual cicadas are used in the making of these treats.
“There will be no cicadas harmed in the process,” the bakery emphasized.
The anticipated launch of the Cicada Cakes is scheduled for Wednesday, priced at $3 each, available exclusively at the bakery located along Waukegan Road in northern suburbs.
Bent Fork Bakery operates from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, offering an opportunity for curious customers to experience this limited-time offering while ensuring the safety and well-being of the cicadas remains undisturbed.
