Washington, DC – The European Union Delegation to the United States celebrated Europe Day with its annual EU Open House event on May 11th, showcasing a vibrant array of European culture, food, and music. This event, held each year on the first Saturday following Europe Day, commemorates the founding of the European Union through the signing of the Schuman Declaration in 1950.
From 10 AM to 4 PM, embassies of EU member countries welcomed the public into their diplomatic residences, offering a day filled with authentic experiences. Visitors had the opportunity to indulge in traditional cuisine, enjoy live music and dance performances, and participate in engaging cultural activities. Throughout the day, attendees could join folk dance lessons, sample European sweets, and even pick up a few phrases in a new language.
The EU Open House was more than just a cultural celebration; it also provided insights into the collaboration between the EU, its member states, and the United States on shared goals. Embassies hosted various activities including games, quizzes, and giveaways, ensuring there was something for every visitor to enjoy.
This year, the EU Delegation’s festivities at 2175 K Street, NW, focused on sustainability. Attendees had the chance to meet EU staff and learn about Europe’s efforts towards environmental sustainability, spanning from fashion to food. Exhibits highlighted initiatives promoting eco-friendly textile manufacturing and featured samples of sustainable European food products.
A highlight of the event was a clothing swap where visitors could exchange spare garments, aligning with the EU’s push to combat “fast fashion” and promote sustainable lifestyle choices. Additionally, attendees experienced a virtual reality simulation of the European Parliament and engaged in a mock voting booth in preparation for the upcoming June European elections.
