BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – As summer approaches, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is gearing up to address the nutritional needs of children who rely on school meals during the academic year.
Ginger Pegues, the Director of Development at the Community Food Bank, highlighted the critical issue, stating that 1 in 4 children in the area – a staggering 66,000 kids – regularly experience hunger. To combat this, the Food Bank’s Summer Meals program will offer free lunches and snacks five days a week throughout the summer months.
Pegues emphasized the importance of summer feeding programs, particularly when children are at home and not benefiting from school meals. “We want to ensure that families are not left wondering how to put food on the table,” Pegues explained, “and that we continue to support children and families in Central Alabama consistently throughout the year.”
The Food Bank plans to host over 40 free food distributions during the summer to reach as many families as possible.
Details about the summer meal program are currently being finalized by the food bank. In the meantime, families in need of immediate assistance can consult the Food Distribution Calendar to locate nearby giveaways.
The Community Food Bank’s efforts underscore the ongoing commitment to combating food insecurity and ensuring that no child in Central Alabama goes hungry during the summer break.
