The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Industrial Modernization Center (IMC) have joined forces to kickstart a new initiative aimed at supporting the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Egypt’s food and agricultural sectors. This collaborative project, set to run for 18 months, marks a significant step forward in ongoing efforts to enhance the capabilities of SMEs in these critical industries.
The program focuses on implementing technical and vocational training programs tailored to nurture emerging industrial enterprises and promote regional development, particularly within food and agricultural sectors. Targeted regions include Sadat, Fayoum, and Beni Suef, where enterprises specializing in vegetables, fruits, medicinal herbs, dairy products, and confectioneries will benefit from tailored services provided by the IMC.
The main goal of the project is to boost sustainable employment opportunities by strengthening local manufacturing capabilities and enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs in the food and agricultural sectors, enabling them to access global markets by meeting international standards.
IMC takes the lead in operationalizing the project, drawing on its extensive experience in sectoral development and established partnerships within the target industries. The agency will identify training needs and organize vocational programs for workforce development, issuing accredited certifications to enhance investment opportunities and facilitate entry into new export markets.
The project’s operational strategy is structured around four key components, to be implemented in collaboration with GIZ and a team of specialists:
- Alignment with National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) Standards: Educational and training modules will prepare 60 enterprises in herbal and aromatic products, horticulture, confectionery, and dairy to meet NFSA registration requirements, including documentation and occupational health and safety protocols.
- Occupational Health and Safety Certification: IMC will support 50 professionals from industrial establishments to obtain internationally recognized occupational health and safety specialist certifications.
- International Compliance Certifications: 160 selected firms will receive support in acquiring international certifications such as ISO 45001, ISO 22000, and FSSC, facilitating their compliance with global standards and market access.
- Employee Skill Enhancement: Vocational training seminars will be conducted for 50 staff members across industrial units to enhance their skills and contribute to sustainable growth in the sector.
This comprehensive initiative underscores a commitment to empowering SMEs in Egypt’s food and agricultural sectors, fostering job creation, and bolstering the country’s industrial competitiveness on a global scale.
