In response to the ongoing financial strain experienced by Australians amidst the current cost-of-living challenges, McDonald’s has unveiled a new addition to its menu, the “McSmart Meal.”
Priced at $6.95 and exclusively available in Australia, the McSmart Meal includes a choice between two Cheeseburgers, two Chicken ‘n’ Cheese burgers, or one of each, accompanied by Small Fries and a Small Soft Drink.
Tobi Fukushima, Marketing Manager for McDonald’s Australia, emphasized the company’s dedication to providing value for its customers, particularly during these trying times. Fukushima stated, “We know how much it means to our customers to offer value, and that has never been more important than it is today.”
The McSmart Meal is slated to be available for purchase nationwide through McDonald’s restaurants and the MyMacca’s app starting June 5th, with operational hours from 10:30 am to midnight daily.
This launch follows expert analysis indicating that McDonald’s price adjustments have exceeded inflation rates significantly. Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder, highlighted notable increases, such as large fries rising by over 50% since 2019, now priced at $4.85, and the classic angus burger climbing more than 25% to $10.
Cooke remarked, “That’s pretty significant — this is coming amid a time when everyone is focusing much more on bang for their buck due to the cost of living.”
Consumer sentiment surveys conducted by Finder revealed a sharp rise in stress related to grocery expenses over the past three years, now on par with concerns about rent or mortgage payments. Cooke noted a heightened scrutiny of food costs, including those at restaurants and fast-food chains.
Recent social media posts have reflected customer astonishment at McDonald’s pricing, particularly regarding items on the “Loose Change” menu, with a 24-piece nugget box priced at $11.95 drawing criticism. One post questioned, “How can now $12 be loose change?”
In response, McDonald’s reiterated its commitment to providing value, pointing out that items on the Loose Change Menu start at $1. The franchise also launched its Big Breakfast Deal, offering two McMuffins, two Hash Browns, and a Medium McCafé Hot Coffee for $12.95.
With the introduction of the McSmart Meal and ongoing initiatives to cater to budget-conscious consumers, McDonald’s aims to address concerns surrounding the affordability of dining out amidst economic pressures.
