Derek Christensen, a prominent chef based in Phoenix known for his work at Bacanora and his current pop-up, Nordborg at Sauvage wine bar, has clinched victory on Food Network’s esteemed culinary competition, “Chopped.”
The episode, titled “Southwestern Strength,” aired on June 25, featuring four talented chefs from the Southwest region. Among them were representatives from New Mexico, Colorado, and Christensen himself. The challenge revolved around crafting dishes using regional ingredients like prickly pear and mesquite flour. Contestants were tasked with preparing appetizers, entrees, and desserts in successive rounds, with one contestant eliminated after each stage.
Christensen impressed the judges throughout the competition, ultimately securing the grand prize of $10,000 with his innovative mesquite-spiced date clafoutis. This dessert featured mesquite flour, ruby red grapefruit, white chocolate chips, and intricately crafted cactus-shaped macarons. His victory was celebrated at a lively watch party held at Wren House Brewing in Phoenix.
This triumph marks Christensen’s second appearance on the Food Network, having previously showcased his culinary skills on “Cutthroat Kitchen” a decade ago. Reflecting on his experience, Christensen contrasted the chaotic nature of “Cutthroat Kitchen” with the more relaxed and supportive atmosphere of “Chopped,” though he noted the relentless pressure of the ticking clock as a significant challenge.
For those eager to savor Christensen’s award-winning cuisine, his Nordborg pop-up offers an opportunity every Thursday and Friday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. at Sauvage wine bar in Phoenix. Nordborg’s menu has recently transitioned to a “summer holiday” series, drawing inspiration from various Mediterranean locales each week.
For viewers keen to witness Christensen’s victorious moment on “Chopped,” the episode “Southwestern Strength” from Season 58 is set to rerun on Food Network at 11 a.m. Arizona time on Tuesday, July 2.
