Worcester, MA – Julia Moriconi, a former firefighter from Chicago, has transformed her passion for ice cream into a thriving business with her food truck, Float. Specializing in innovative floats and artisanal ice creams, Moriconi has quickly become a favorite at local festivals and markets.
Float, adorned in bright orange with a bubbly print, first hit the streets just last year, introducing its signature floats—a scoop of ice cream paired with root beer or coffee, creating a delightful “floating” treat.
Moriconi’s journey to culinary success was far from conventional. After over two decades serving as a firefighter and paramedic in Chicago, she pursued culinary education at the French Culinary Institute in New York City and the food science program at Pennsylvania State University. Armed with this knowledge, she mastered the art of ice cream making, focusing on quality ingredients and unique flavors.
“I use the most expensive dairy because it’s the best,” Moriconi explains proudly. Her commitment to quality is evident in every scoop, ensuring a rich mouthfeel and diverse flavor profiles from her production facility on Brussels Street, Worcester, meeting FDA standards.
The path to success wasn’t without its challenges. Moriconi recalls her breakthrough moment on July 8, 2020, when she sold out of 100 pints of ice cream within 90 minutes at the Shrewsbury Farmers Market. “That day made me realize I needed a bigger machine,” she laughs. Bootstrapping her way from a car for home deliveries to multiple transport vans, she adapted her operation to include food truck services, enhancing mobility and efficiency.
“I can work standing up in it,” Moriconi explains of her vans-turned-trucks, “shielded from the elements, allowing us to serve our customers rain or shine.” This adaptability has allowed Float to thrive, offering not only eight core ice cream flavors and three sorbets but also seasonal variations and customizable floats, mocktails, and Italian sodas.
Moriconi’s creativity knows no bounds. “I wake up from a dream and think, ‘Blueberry mojito—let’s add chocolate!'” Her dedication to fresh, innovative flavors has made Float a staple at food truck festivals throughout the county, also catering events with flair and flavor.
As Float continues to make waves in Central Massachusetts, Moriconi remains focused on expanding her reach while maintaining the quality and creativity that define her brand. For ice cream enthusiasts and float aficionados alike, Float promises a sweet, refreshing experience unlike any other.
