The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a voluntary recall of several dog and cat food products across the United States, citing potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes.
Viva Raw, the manufacturer, has recalled Lot 21244 of the following frozen 1-pound brick products distributed between May 15 and June 28:
- Viva Turkey for Dogs Ground
- Viva Turkey for Dogs Chunked
- Viva Turkey for Cats, Viva Pure Turkey
- Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in dogs, cats, and humans who come into contact with contaminated products. The FDA has emphasized that no illnesses related to this recall have been reported thus far.
Symptoms of listeria infection in pets may include fever, diarrhea, depression, shock, and in severe cases, death. For humans, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially more severe complications such as miscarriage in pregnant women.
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products are advised to dispose of them safely to prevent exposure to animals or other individuals.
This recall serves as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and prevent potential health risks associated with listeria contamination.
