Steve Reed has been appointed as the new Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, in his initial round of Cabinet appointments following the recent General Election victory.
Reed, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Streatham and Croydon North, secured his seat for the fourth consecutive term with 23,232 votes and a commanding majority of 15,603. He has served as an MP since November 2012 and held the role of Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since September 2023.
Prior to his parliamentary career, Reed was the leader of Lambeth London Borough Council from 2006 to 2012. He has been a vocal advocate on environmental issues, notably speaking out against the sewage scandal and advocating for universal monitoring of sewage outlets.
Reed’s appointment underscores the Prime Minister’s commitment to addressing environmental and rural affairs issues at the forefront of government policy.
