As the Paris 2024 Olympics unfold, food supply issues have emerged as a significant concern in the Olympic Village. Athletes have faced shortages of key staples such as grilled chicken and eggs, prompting some to bring packed meals for their meals, according to The Times of London.
British athletes have notably avoided the Village’s dining facilities, leading officials to deploy an additional chef to Paris to address the food quality for the team. Caterers are increasing their orders to meet demand, particularly for eggs and chicken, which were intended to be sourced locally in France.
Andy Anson, Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association, acknowledged the issue, stating, “At the beginning of every Games, there are usually two or three issues, and transportation is always one. But the big one this time is the food in the village, which is not adequate.”
In an effort to promote sustainability, Paris Olympics organizers introduced more plant-based options to reduce the Games’ carbon footprint. Despite the variety of cuisines and an abundance of French baguettes, the plant-based meals have not met the dietary preferences of many athletes.
One British athlete described the current food situation as disorganized compared to the well-structured facilities at the Tokyo Games.
The Village is equipped to serve approximately 40,000 meals daily, with 3,300 seats available in the main restaurant. While some countries rely exclusively on the Village for their meals, British athletes are situated in a segment of the Village near the River Seine, which features its own restaurant and performance lounge.
