Independent Scottish distiller Eden Mill has introduced a potentially one-of-a-kind new mixology syrup that combines salt, smoke, and sweetness, offering a bold and distinct Fife coast influence to cocktails.
The East Neuk of Fife was renowned in the past for its sea salt production. The coastal village of St Monans was a significant hub of the trade during the 17th century, though it declined in the 1820s.
Two hundred years after that, husband and wife team Darren and Mhairi Peattie established the East Neuk Salt Co. They employ a blend of traditional and modern techniques to produce 100% organically hand-harvested Scottish sea salt flakes from the waters of the East Neuk.
For Eden Mill’s latest syrup, the St Monans sea salt is smoked using cask staves from the distillery’s award-winning single malt whisky. The outcome is described as a “complex cocktail modifier” that imparts a light smoky essence, which is counterbalanced by sea salt and sugar. It is crafted to enhance the depth and complexity of gin and whisky drinks, as well as mocktails.
Regarding the partnership, Eden Mill’s head of marketing, Hannah Ingram, remarked, “Fife is our base and an essential part of our brand. It has an abundant and rich array of resources, and we aim to celebrate it whenever possible, from sea salt to barley and botanicals. Our team was inspired by the work of East Neuk Salt Co, and we eagerly seized the opportunity to collaborate with them. The syrup is truly delicious and is especially well-suited for an Old Fashioned.” She added, “With its palate-pleasing blend of sweet, salt, and smoke, it instantly transports you to a beach barbecue along Fife’s beautiful coastline.”
East Neuk Salt Company’s Darren Peattie stated, “It’s wonderful to partner with a local Fife business like Eden Mill.
