Mala House, a new Sichuan-style restaurant in Boise, is now open for takeout and is set to offer a genuine taste of traditional Chinese cuisine, distinct from the familiar Americanized Chinese food found at many local restaurants.
Located at 3027 N. Cole Rd., the restaurant specializes in authentic Sichuan dishes known for their bold, spicy, and “mouth-numbing” flavors. Owner Sherry Chen, who opened the restaurant after hearing many customers express a desire for more traditional Chinese dining options, emphasizes that Mala House serves “real Chinese food,” not the typical American Chinese fare.
Currently, Mala House operates from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, extending hours until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays. While the dining area is still closed to customers, Chen expects to begin welcoming in-house diners by January.
The menu features a variety of dishes that reflect Sichuan cuisine’s reputation for heat. Signature offerings include hot pots, where diners can cook their choice of American Wagyu beef, lamb, short ribs, and vegetables in a spicy, bubbling broth. While these hot pots are not yet available for takeout, they will be a major highlight once dine-in service begins.
In addition to hot pots, Mala House offers a range of dry pots, including options with frog legs, chicken, spareribs, and crawfish, as well as grilled fish. The restaurant also serves a selection of sides, including fried rice and stir-fry noodles.
For those craving an authentic Sichuan experience, Mala House promises a flavorful, spicy adventure that sets it apart from the usual Chinese food offerings in Boise.
