Mandaluyong City, PH – Filipino dessert lovers can now savor one of Japan’s most popular sweet treats without leaving the country. The celebrated Japanese dessert shop, Warabimochi Kamakura, officially launched its first Philippine branch at SM Megamall on Sunday.
What Makes Warabimochi Special?
Warabimochi is not your everyday mochi. This traditional Japanese snack stands out for its silky, jelly-like texture, typically dusted with roasted soybean flour, or kinako, and served with a sweet syrup. Its unique blend of lightness, texture, and flavor has made it a staple in Japanese culture and a favorite among dessert enthusiasts worldwide.
Bringing Warabimochi to the Philippines
In an exclusive interview with GMA News Online, Victoria Riingen, general manager of Warabimochi Kamakura Philippines, shared how she first encountered the dessert during her time in Singapore.
“When I first had it, it was the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted in my life,” Riingen recalled.
Her passion for Warabimochi continued upon returning to the Philippines. When the opportunity arose to bring the franchise to the country, she seized it.
“Last year, almost every country in Southeast Asia except Vietnam reached out to them for a franchise,” she explained. “I was fortunate enough to secure the franchise for the Philippines.”
A Growing Global Presence
Warabimochi Kamakura has established itself as a global brand with over 50 branches in Japan and locations in the United States, Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia, and Singapore. The Philippines is now the latest addition to its expanding international footprint.
What’s on the Menu?
The Philippine branch offers the brand’s signature Warabimochi Original (P480) and Matcha flavor (P550). Customers can also enjoy beverages infused with Warabimochi, such as Luxury Strawberry Milk (P250), Coffee Milk (P230), and Lemonade (P230).
To mark its debut, the shop is running a buy-one-get-one promotion for Warabimochi drinks from Sunday to Tuesday.
