While the commercialism surrounding Valentine’s Day is hard to ignore, there’s something about this time of year that makes certain seasonal products hard to resist. One such item is chocolate – a treat that truly lives up to its reputation for spreading the love.
Some readers have reached out recently, noting that some of the chocolates I’ve recommended have been out of stock. Unfortunately, that’s a reality with craft and small-scale products. This week, I’m highlighting Luisa Abram’s chocolates, but I must warn you: stock shortages are likely. Abram, a Brazilian chocolate-maker, specializes in wild-grown cocoa sourced from the Amazon rainforest. I’ve written about her dark milks in the past, but this time, I’ve discovered her 70/80% range, which includes a fantastic 81% Purus River bar. It’s so good, it almost tastes like a dark milk – and it’s absolutely superb.
But, as with many small-batch producers, availability can be hit-or-miss. Patience is key, but you can always check Cocoa Runners for updates on stock. While the 81% Purus River is currently unavailable, it’s expected to return later in the year.
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I find myself at odds with this holiday’s commercialized gift-giving culture, especially when it comes to chocolate. However, there’s an exception: Islands Chocolate. They offer a hazelnut-packed choconut spread (£8.95), which is being repackaged for the occasion with the phrase “Spread the love.” It’s a perfect sentiment, universally appealing, and a reminder that love doesn’t need to be tied to a specific day. Plus, it’s incredibly delicious – a true treat for any chocolate lover.
