In a unique taste test, Japanese reporter Udonko and her pet dog ventured into the world of “human-grade pet food,” a product designed to be safe and tasty for both humans and their canine companions. The food in question was purchased from Hanabatake Farm, a Hokkaido-based company known for its dairy products.
While shopping for their annual Lucky Bag, which contained an assortment of cream-filled buns and creamy gratin dishes, Udonko noticed a striking item on the shelves: dog food that met the standards for human consumption. Hanabatake Farm’s product line included Homemade Goat’s Milk Cheese Cookies, marketed as “human-grade pet food.” Intrigued by the concept, Udonko decided to give the cookies a try.
The product’s ingredient list was similar to that of regular human food, containing items like flour, milk, natural camembert and goat cheeses, and shortening. Upon pouring out the cookies onto a plate, they resembled small, bite-sized squares, which could easily be mistaken for breakfast cereal.
Curious about the flavor, Udonko took a bite. Initially expecting a strong, pungent taste from the goat’s milk, she found herself surprised by how bland the cookies were. After tasting the first cookie, she detected a faint aftertaste of wheat and cheese, but nothing overwhelming. The snack was light and easy to eat, though it didn’t leave a lasting impression.
Seeking the ultimate opinion, Udonko turned to her dog for a second round of testing. Typically, her dog remains disinterested when she approaches with food, but the scent of the goat’s milk cheese cookies immediately caught his attention. He eagerly devoured the snacks, even knocking a few out of Udonko’s hand in the process.
The experience was eye-opening for Udonko, who reflected on the differences in taste and smell between humans and dogs. While it’s common for dog owners to share their meals with their pets, it’s important to remember that dogs have more sensitive senses of smell and taste. Many foods deemed safe for dogs, such as certain meats, are often heavily seasoned, which can be harmful to their health.
Although the human-grade pet food from Hanabatake Farm may not win over many human fans, it was a reminder of the need for safe, dog-friendly alternatives. At the very least, it’s a product that allows humans and their pets to share a meal safely
