Food Rescue Sengkang, a local initiative aimed at reducing food waste, has seen remarkable growth since its inception in 2019. Originally launched with just 10 volunteers, the organization now boasts a dedicated team of 80, and their efforts have helped rescue approximately 50,000 kilograms of food every week—enough to feed up to 25,000 people.
Co-founder Derek Ong, 59, shared the mission behind the group, explaining that they focus on rescuing a wide range of food, including fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, and both dried and frozen items. “Whatever can still be eaten, we save and distribute it to reduce waste,” Ong said in an interview with Berita Harian. He also emphasized the importance of educating the public that “ugly” food—those deemed unsightly but perfectly edible—should not be discarded.
The organization rescues excess stock, unsold goods, and imperfect produce from various sources, such as the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre. Volunteers are instrumental in collecting these items and repacking them for redistribution across Singapore. This operation runs from Monday to Saturday, with Ong, an accountant by profession, overseeing the logistics.
In addition to regular food distribution, Food Rescue Sengkang also hosts a weekly “ugly” food market every Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Thanggam Hub, located at 40 Fernvale Road. The market offers rescued produce at discounted prices, fostering greater awareness about food waste and providing affordable options for the community.
The organization shares the rescued food with welfare homes, religious organizations, and other charitable entities, ensuring that no food goes to waste. However, despite growing demand for their services, Ong noted that the organization faces significant challenges, including a shortage of volunteers, limited funding, and a need for more coordinators and partners.
While Food Rescue Sengkang has received numerous requests to expand its market, Ong stressed that additional volunteers are essential to meeting this demand and continuing their mission.
