In a significant move coordinated with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Stanley has announced the recall of a staggering 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs. The root cause of this recall is a concerning safety issue related to the mugs’ lids, which have the potential to detach when exposed to heat and pressure. This malfunction poses a serious risk of burns, especially when the mugs are filled with hot liquids.
The problem has manifested in numerous incidents across the globe. There have been a total of 91 reports of lids detaching, and tragically, 38 burn injuries have been confirmed, two of which occurred in the United States.
The recall specifically targets double – walled stainless steel mugs in the Switchback and Trigger Action models. These mugs come in 12 – ounce, 16 – ounce, and 20 – ounce sizes and are available in white, black, and green colors, all equipped with polypropylene lids. They were sold on major platforms and retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Dick’s Sporting Goods between June 2016 and December 2024, with a price range of $20 to $50.
Consumers are advised to check the bottom of their mugs for specific model numbers to determine if their product is affected. For the Switchback model, the 12 – ounce version with model number 20 – 01437, the 16 – ounce versions with model numbers 20 – 01436 and 20 – 02211 are included. For the Trigger Action model, the 12 – ounce versions with model numbers 20 – 02033, 20 – 02779, and 20 – 02825; the 16 – ounce versions with model numbers 20 – 02030, 20 – 02745, and 20 – 02957; and the 20 – ounce versions with model numbers 20 – 02034 and 20 – 02746 are part of the recall.
If consumers find that their mugs match the recalled models, they are urged to stop using them immediately. Stanley is offering a free replacement lid solution. Consumers can call 866 – 792 – 5445 (during Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM ET), visit the Stanley Recall Portal online, or go to the official website stanley1913.com and click on the recall link. It is crucial not to use the mug again until the lid has been successfully replaced to avoid any potential burn hazards.
