TOKYO – Japanese nonlife insurers are introducing new policies aimed at reducing food waste, a growing concern in the country. Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance are set to launch plans that will cover the costs associated with reselling food items rejected for technical reasons, such as delayed deliveries or packaging damage.
Many edible products are discarded due to issues like packaging damage during transport or delays caused by extreme weather events, including heavy snow. These new policies are designed to mitigate the financial impact of such losses, ensuring that food that remains safe to consume is not wasted.
