Sukiya, Japan’s largest beef bowl chain, will close nearly 2,000 locations for four days following reports of rat-infested miso soup.
The closure, which will begin on March 31, was announced in a statement posted on the company’s website Saturday. Sukiya, owned by Znesho Holdings, has apologized after a January incident where a location in western Japan served miso soup containing a rat.
To make matters worse, Sukiya reported a second contamination on Friday, when a Tokyo-area store served a dish with a bug.
As a result, the chain will shut down all but a few of its 1,965 locations across Japan, with plans to reopen on April 4. The company emphasized that the closures were necessary to address the issue and prevent further infestations.
“We take this matter very seriously and deeply apologize to our customers,” Sukiya stated.
Sukiya also operates around 650 stores in China, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
