Ryan, an 11-year-old boy hailing from Dorridge, situated near Solihull, has undertaken an inspiring mission to generate funds for local food banks through his collection of aluminium cans. Displaying unwavering determination, Ryan aspires to gather a substantial £20,000 by the upcoming Christmas season, with the noble objective of procuring a truck loaded with essential food items.
Devoted to his cause, Ryan diligently accumulates approximately 400 kilograms of aluminium cans on a monthly basis, which he subsequently sells to scrapyards. Since embarking on this initiative in November, he has succeeded in raising over £1,000. However, he now harbors a loftier ambition – to achieve the remarkable sum of £20,000. To realize this ambition, Ryan has committed to walking a minimum of 5 kilometers (approximately 3 miles) each week, confidently embracing this challenge with a spirited resolve.
Expressing his optimism, Ryan shared, “Hopefully we will get to our target this Christmas.” The catalyst for his altruistic venture originated when he observed a shift in his parents’ shopping habits, prompted by the prevailing cost of living crisis. Prompted by this realization, Ryan embarked on a mission to aid others, encountering the concept of collecting cans online.
Commencing with the collection of cans within his immediate neighborhood, Ryan’s efforts, in collaboration with his parents, have grown into a network encompassing 100 contributors. This endeavor has also expanded to include designated collection points across Birmingham and Solihull, signifying the expanding impact of his philanthropic campaign.
Reflecting on his journey, Ryan conveyed, “I feel quite proud and also feel really excited to continue this because I just like the feeling of being the person that has helped.” Conversations with the generous can donors impelled Ryan to formulate a plan to generate additional funds. This strategy involves procuring a substantial quantity of food at wholesale prices through the acquisition of a truckload of essential supplies.
Undeterred by the challenges that lie ahead, Ryan has successfully amassed £500 since the inception of his weekly walking regimen in July. His steadfast commitment extends beyond the immediate horizon of Christmas, as he affirmed, “if it doesn’t work out, we will continue.” Ryan’s exemplary dedication and compassion underscore the capacity of individuals, regardless of age, to effect positive change within their communities.
