A man, believed to be a food delivery driver, sustained life-changing injuries while attempting to extinguish a fire that erupted in his e-bike. The incident occurred in Highgate, north London, on September 12th. The man suffered burns on various parts of his body as he tried to put out the fire using an extinguisher. Firefighters later arrived and extinguished the blaze.
The London Fire Brigade has issued a warning about the increasing number of fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters. They reported 137 such incidents in 2023, leading to three fatalities and 50 injuries. This marks a significant rise compared to the previous year. It was noted that there have been more battery fires in 2023 alone than the entire year of 2022.
In this specific case, an investigation determined that the e-bike was charging when the fire broke out, and the charger had been purchased online just the day before. This incident is part of a series of e-bike fires occurring in London.
