In a significant move aimed at enhancing accessibility and convenience for a broader range of customers, Uber Eats has announced its intention to accept food stamps (via Electronic Benefits Transfer or EBT cards) and healthcare benefits as valid payment methods for grocery delivery orders. Additionally, the company plans to introduce a new artificial intelligence (AI) assistant designed to assist grocery customers in securing better deals.
Commencing in 2024, individuals possessing a valid Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which disburses funds under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, commonly known as food stamps), will have the opportunity to utilize their funds to cover the cost of grocery delivery services through Uber Eats.
Furthermore, the Uber Eats app will extend its payment acceptance to FSA (Flexible Spending Accounts) cards and flex cards issued within healthcare programs such as Medicaid’s Managed Care and Medicare Advantage plans.
This announcement aligns with Uber’s strategic shift towards food delivery, which has thrived in the post-pandemic landscape. In 2022, Uber Eats generated nearly $11 billion in revenue, a substantial increase from the $8.3 billion recorded in 2021 and a significant leap from the $3.9 billion achieved in 2020.
By expanding its payment options to include food stamps and healthcare benefits, Uber Eats seeks to provide an inclusive and accessible platform for a diverse range of customers, further solidifying its position in the food delivery industry.
