Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) has initiated a thorough investigation into a potential case of food poisoning that may have originated from one of its on-campus dining facilities.
According to a spokesperson from the university, the Environmental Health and Safety Department is collaborating with the City of New Britain Department of Public Health and the university’s food service provider, Sodexo, to delve into the suspected outbreak of food poisoning at the Hilltop Café.
As a precautionary measure, the university has temporarily shuttered the Hilltop Café while health officials work diligently to pinpoint the potential source of the issue. In the interim, the university’s other on-campus dining establishment, Memorial Hall, will remain operational.
Students who manifest symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort are encouraged to seek medical attention. They have the option to visit the Student Wellness Center or consult with university health service professionals at no expense.
The precise number of students affected remains undisclosed at this time. The Connecticut Department of Public Health has acknowledged the incident and is in the process of gathering additional information.
For many students like freshman Dominic Ladana, the Hilltop Café had been a favored dining option. Expressing his reliance on the facility, he remarked, “It’s probably the best place here in my opinion. The food was good. The service was good. I eat here every day—three, four times a day. So I rely on this food.”
Currently, Hilltop Café remains inaccessible, with locked doors and signs indicating closure. The exact date for its reopening remains uncertain pending the outcome of the investigation.
