Singapore, November 28, 2023 — In the wake of a humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas, the Singapore Bible Society has issued a call for urgent donations to provide essential aid to families affected by the conflict in Gaza. The truce, initiated after seven weeks of hostilities since October 7, has allowed aid trucks to enter the Gaza Strip, offering a glimmer of hope for those grappling with the aftermath of the prolonged conflict.
United Nations agencies have applauded the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, emphasizing the critical need for assistance to the thousands of displaced and injured individuals. Responding to the call for support, Singaporeans have swiftly rallied to donate basic necessities.
The Bible Society of Singapore, at the forefront of relief efforts, is seeking to raise a minimum of US$200,000 to fund the procurement and distribution of urgent supplies to both Israeli and Palestinian families affected by the ongoing crossfire. The dire situation in Gaza, marked by scarcity of food and the approaching winter, underscores the urgency of the appeal.
In a statement, the Bible Society outlined its commitment to providing aid, including food, clothing, blankets, medical supplies, and other essentials. The organization appeals to the public for support to bring comfort and relief to those whose lives have been forever changed by the unrelenting conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Nashat Filmon, Executive Director of the Palestinian Bible Society, emphasized the scarcity of food in Gaza, expressing hope for continued efforts to purchase and distribute essential provisions. Victor Kalisher, Executive Director of the Bible Society in Israel, highlighted the impact on communities near the Gaza Strip, particularly the trauma experienced by residents, especially children. Warm clothing is identified as a critical need as winter approaches.
Numerous Palestinian families on both sides of the strip have been displaced, with a significant number of Christians among those affected. The Bible Society is collaborating closely with partners to coordinate and allocate collected funds to the Bible Society in Israel (BSI), Palestinian Bible Society (PBS), Arab-Israeli Bible Society (AIBS), and World Evangelical Alliance (WEA). This collaborative effort aims to provide essential humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict in the region.
