In a heartening display of community support, Adie Knox Arena witnessed long queues on Tuesday morning as individuals eagerly awaited the distribution of 100 holiday food hampers by the UHC – Hub of Opportunities.
Comprising essentials such as turkey, potatoes, carrots, and other canned goods, these hampers aim to provide complete holiday meals for those in need.
An additional 200 turkeys and food hampers are slated for distribution at the UHC Hub of Opportunities’ east end location on Thursday, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to alleviating holiday hardships.
June Muir, CEO of the UHC-Hub of Opportunities, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to assist 300 families but acknowledged the substantial demand that exceeds their current resources.
“Three hundred turkeys may not seem like a large quantity given the evident need, but we’re doing our utmost, and we’re very thankful that we can provide support to at least 300 families,” Muir remarked.
Local food banks have reported a surge in individuals seeking assistance over the past year, paralleled by a decline in food donations owing to escalating grocery prices. Despite these challenges, the UHC-Hub of Opportunities has successfully compensated through community-driven fundraisers and monetary contributions.
“We’ve received generous checks and monetary donations from the community, enabling us to procure essential items. However, the demand continues to grow,” Muir emphasized.
Adding to the collective effort, MP Brian Masse and MPP Lisa Gretzky actively participated in Tuesday’s food deliveries, underscoring the collaborative spirit. The upcoming Thursday distribution will see the involvement of MP Irek Kusmierczyk and MPP Andrew Dowie in facilitating further aid to families in need.
