Blendtopia Products LLC has initiated a recall of 29,078 cases of its 7-ounce frozen Blendtopia brand Superfood Smoothie Kits due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The affected smoothie blends encompass the Blendtopia brand’s “Glow,” “Detox,” “Energy,” “Immunity,” and “Strength” Superfood Smoothie Kits. These products, bearing Best By dates of July 2021, October 2021, and November 2021, were distributed nationwide and retailed at select stores as well as through online channels.
The company’s discovery of the issue stemmed from its rigorous quality control processes, with indications pointing towards a specific supplied ingredient as the likely source of contamination. Acting out of an abundance of caution and in full cooperation with the FDA, Blendtopia is voluntarily recalling the products. As of now, there have been no reports of illness associated with the consumption of the recalled items.
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria in question, may contaminate food without exhibiting visible signs of spoilage, potentially leading to severe and sometimes life-threatening infections. Individuals who have consumed the recalled products and subsequently exhibit symptoms of Listeria infection are advised to seek medical attention promptly and inform their healthcare providers about potential exposure to Listeria.
Moreover, consumers who have ingested the affected products are urged to monitor themselves for symptoms over the ensuing weeks. Listeriosis symptoms can manifest up to 70 days after exposure and may include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Diagnosis of Listeria infections necessitates specific laboratory tests, as the symptoms can resemble those of other ailments.
Particular demographics, including pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems, are at heightened risk of experiencing severe complications, life-threatening infections, and even death as a result of Listeria exposure. Pregnant women, in particular, should remain vigilant, as Listeria infections during pregnancy can lead to adverse outcomes such as premature delivery, neonatal infection, or stillbirth.
