EAST HAVEN, CT – Celebrating seven decades of delectable treats and cherished memories, Petonito’s Pastry & Cupcake Shoppe stands as a testament to family tradition and unwavering dedication. Founded in 1954 by Salvatore and Dolores Petonito, alongside their son Mark, the bakery has become a beloved landmark in East Haven, Connecticut.
Regina Criscuolo, who began her journey with the Petonitos in her youth, reminisces, “Having worked for Mr. Petonito as a young girl, he taught me a lot about the business.” She reflects on the enduring influence of their ethos, stating, “I always looked up to him and admired his work ethic. We continue to instill that same work ethic into all that we do.”
Now, at the helm with her husband Michael and children Amanda and Michael, Criscuolo emphasizes the integral role of family in the bakery’s success. “Our moms also help out, and my aunt has worked here over 30 years. I feel the success of all these years has been baking great, consistent and delicious items that families have come to know and love.”
Central to their longevity has been a steadfast commitment to preserving Italian traditions and recipes. “Keeping the Italian traditions and recipes alive has been the key to our success,” says Criscuolo. “We have continued with our own family to continue in their footsteps.”
The dedication of the Criscuolo family and their loyal staff has been pivotal. “Hours and hours of dedication and hard work have also played a pivotal role in the 70 years in business,” explains Criscuolo. “Having a family run business has been extremely important over the years. Our staff is also like family, and we all work cohesively to make Petonito’s Pastry and Cupcake Shoppe loved by so many.”
Generations of customers have frequented the East Haven pastry shop, crafting enduring memories with each visit. “So many customers will come in with so many fond memories, and we are now making new memories with our current customers,” expresses Criscuolo. “We would like to personally thank the Petonitos for making this bakery so special.”
In gratitude for their patrons’ loyalty and support, Petonito’s Pastry and Cupcake Shoppe will host a commemorative event on Sunday, April 21. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., guests are invited to “stroll down memory lane,” savor complimentary desserts, and enjoy live performances by the Valente Brothers.
Looking ahead, Criscuolo shares her enthusiasm, “We look forward to serving customers and baking all their favorite desserts for the next 70 years.”
